Game Review
A late change saw Harry Hollingshead replace Rod McLean. This was a welcome and vital win for the Blues, against a team also gunning for a place in the top four. Key forward Jack Wrout was the focal point in an impressive all-round effort. The Blues held a 13 point lead at half time. While the club was entertaining guests in the rooms, coach Brighton Diggins' address to the players could be heard. "Do not let this Melbourne side get you in," he advised. "Play your natural game, and do not try to engage them in heavy tactics," was his sound advice. The Blues increased their lead during the third term and held a 29 point lead at the last break. Melbourne started strongly but missed a few easy goals. Clever play by Cooper got the ball to Crisp. He then ran through the centre to score a goal from the half forward flank. Ron Barassi (senior) and Beames scored for the Demons, then the Blues slammed on 4 goals, Wrout 2, Hale and Cooper, this then put the game out of Melbourne's grasp. Unlike other grounds, Princes Park's surface was excellent, and this enabled the Blues' skilled players Green, Carney, Cooper, Schmidt and Crisp to excel. Carlton knocked off the League leaders to keep their final four aspirations alive.
At the end of this round Carlton were in 5th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 108.5.
