Game Review

Carlton coach Jack Worrall surprised his players during the week prior to this match by doing the exact opposite of what they had expected. Instead of punishing them on the track for their shock loss to Geelong, he gave some of his charges a night off, and trained the rest only lightly. They responded by defeating Melbourne in a spirited contest by 16 points.

Carlton lost Mick Grace, Jim Marchbank and Frank Williams to injury in the lead up, so Vin Gardiner, Charlie Hammond and Les Beck were included as their replacements. The match began with some rugged clashes in the middle of the ground, before both sides settled and the scoreboard began ticking over.

At half-time, it was a very even contest, with Carlton in front by 10 points. But with the aid of a freshening breeze, the Blues kept the Redlegs scoreless in the third term, while rattling on 3.6 themselves to skip away to a match-winning advantage of 34 points. Despite a determined surge by Melbourne in the closing stages, during which they added 4.4 to Carlton’s 1.3, the Redlegs came up short and suffered their sixth loss of the season. Best players for the winners were followers Fred Elliott and ‘Mallee’ Johnson, as well as exciting recruit Harvey Kelly, who booted four goals.

In the other matches there were no surprise results, and the Navy Blues further improved their percentage in top spot on the ladder. St Kilda, Collingwood and South Melbourne made up the four, with the improving Geelong in fifth.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 143.8.
