Game Review

If Carlton’s big loss to South Melbourne the previous week was a surprise, then this follow-up defeat by Fitzroy at Princes Park must have had Blues coach Jack Worrall fuming. In fact, Carlton was fortunate to get so close to the Maroons, because the visitors controlled the game throughout, and had ten more scoring shots in posting 4.14 (38) to the Blues' 5.3 (33).

But in another twist of fate, top side Essendon was also beaten – by Collingwood at VIctoria Park. So Essendon and Carlton were now joint leaders, separated by percentage. Fitzroy and Collingwood made up the four, with South Melbourne two wins away in fifth. Yet again, Frank Caine and Mick Grace each kicked two goals for the Blues, and they retained joint leadership of the goal-kicking table with 31 majors apiece.

Victoria defeats South Australia by 16 points on a day where more interest is in the postponed Carlton and Fitzroy game. Critics claim it was only changed because of boredom with interstate football, and the belief that the Carlton vs Fitzroy game would be a greater spectacle. - 100 Years of Australian Rules Football.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 2nd spot on the ladder with a percentage of 140.5.
