Game Review

Blues' captain-coach Horrie Clover found a likely partner in attack in debutante Harry Credlin. Together, they kicked nine of Carlton's 14 goals in a comfortable win off the back of a 6-goal third quarter.

"The second meeting of Carlton and South Melbourne provided a hard, slogging game from beginning to end, with neither side showing anything special in the matter of scientific football. It was practically devoid of all the finer points of the game, such as stab-kicking, legitimate handball, and good kicking. Certainly, the southern side of the ground was under water, and the other portions somewhat greasy and heavy, and probably this fact had much to do with the comparative poor quality of football.
At half-time the Southerners looked to have a good chance, but being six points behind; but thereafter the blues played more determinedly, taking greater risks than their opponents, and meeting with better success. Carlton played really well against the wind in the last quarter, and, by scoring two goals against South's three, made certain of the result. They marked and passed with greater accuracy, though even then it was below their best form. In the second half there was a bit of feeling generated, the play became rough and spiteful. There were about 17,000 spectators present." (Trove: Australasian August 22, p23)

"Carlton have struck it rich in Credlin, who made his debut in League company against South Melbourne on Saturday. They brought him in from the junior team and placed him centre forward. He is as keen as mustard, scouts cleverly for position, marks brilliantly. Five goals went down to his credit in the match - an excellent performance for a League novice." (Sporting Globe August 23 p7)

George Bolt was the Blues' best player, South's Roy Cazaly was best on the ground.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 4th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 105.6.
