Game Review

Carlton won their third game in four matches to finish off Season 2004 on a high - 10 wins in a year in which we sought the help of a number of 'retreads.' Even though this was a largely meaningless game, with neither team in finals contention, a crowd of more than 60,000 attended - the largest for the year.

The Magpies were in control in the first half and had a 19 point lead at half time. But the Blues then fought back, with Anthony Koutoufides both dominating the clearances and providing a target up forward, kicking 3 valuable goals from strong marks. While Ryan Houlihan was everywhere, picking up 10 possessions for the quarter, including setting up a goal for Jarrad Waite in the final minute- their fifth for the quarter to the Magpies' one- to give the Blues the lead for the first time in the match. They then kicked the first 2 goals of the final term, to open up a 16 point lead. It was then goal for goal and some remarkable accuracy from the Blues saw them kick 5.0 for the quarter, while the Magpies missed 3 shots at goal. The lead was 13 points with 3 minutes remaining but then the Magpies kicked 2 goals in the next 2 minutes, to reduce the margin to just one point with a minute remaining. Carlton managed to hold on to that lead until the final siren.

Koutoufides and Houlihan each finished with 22 possessions. Brendan Fevola and Justin Davies also kicked 3 goals.

Milestones

Last game: Daniel Harford
Interesting Fact: This would be the last time for almost 2 and a half years that the Blues would win 2 games in a row. Given our wooden spoons for the next 2 years, the Blues would have to wait until mid-way through 2007 to repeat this feat.
Interesting Fact: This would be the second time in 2004 that the Blues would win 3 out of 4 matches (Rounds 11-13 were consecutive wins), a feat not replicated until 2008.
