Game Review

Richmond get the services of top forward Percy Martini of Geelong. They rush him into the side without a permit, but it doesn't prevent the Blues from beating them. Wayward kicking cost the last-placed Tigers this match and the Blues, who had 5 less scoring shots, ended up winning by 6 points.

"Richmond took in another Geelong player - Martini - on Saturday against Carlton without obtaining a permit for him. The object, of course, is to build up the side so that the public will see good even games every week.
Under the exceptional circumstances, and seeing that all profits are to be devoted to War Funds, they contend that the permit rules should be suspended for the year. At any rate, they are prepared to act as if they were suspended, but it remains to be seen what the five clubs not playing will do in the matter. The other three clubs are, I understand, agreeable to their bringing in not more than six players from other teams." (Trove: Winner May 24 p9)

Richmond outclassed Carlton in all aspects of the match except for the final term. The Blues once again were facing defeat but they were, "dashing down the field time after time carrying everything before them. In a few minutes a likely defeat was changed to victory. Irresistible rushes were supported by clever, accurate exchanges, and straight kicking. Goal after goal came with surprising rapidity."

Ted Brown couldn't play as he was unable to obtain leave from the Army. Sharp's dad was a baker, and Athol had to deliver bread this Saturday afternoon! Charlie Hammond hadn't fully recovered from a broken toe but he was pressed into service.
Richmond won the toss and kicked with the wind to the railway goal. Players were fumbling a lot early on and one of the reporters said this was because the ball was not properly inflated . However, the players got used to it and the ball handling improved. The game was developing into a battle of the half back lines. However, the home side managed to get the ball into the forward line on a few occasions but scored only one goal, by the former Geelong new-comer Martini. Richmond had wasted the wind and led by only 10 points at quarter time.
Carlton attacked from the bounce. Richmond's backs were up to the task and withstood the pressure. The Blues kept attacking and from a scrimmage in the goal square Vin Gardiner put through Carlton's first goal. Carlton went forward again and Percy Daykin from a long way out place-kicked a beautiful goal. With the closeness of the scores the play became fast and furious. Percy Daykin, Andy McDonald, Billy Dick and George White in this period were outstanding for the Blues. Richmond were playing well, but Carlton kept up the pressure. The ball was booted in to the forward line where Vin Gardiner took a clever mark. He went back a kicked a nicely angled goal to put the Blues in the lead. Like Richmond, Carlton too, had wasted the advantage of the wind and led by only 9 points at half time.
From the start of the third quarter Richmond attacked and goaled almost immediately. One reporter said during this quarter they played the best football he had seen from them since they joined the VFL! Not to be out done Joe Shortill took a screamer on the goal line to restore the status quo. The home team quickly added two quick goals. Despite the best efforts of Ernie Jamieson, Billy Dick, and Andy McDonald, the Tigers followed up soon after with another two majors. Ernie's kicking out from full-back was a highlight. At three quarter time the Blues trailed by 18 points and to make matters worse the wind had died.
Richmond added a behind and a goal from new-comer Martini, and the lead was now out to 25 points. The yellow and black barrackers were ecstatic, "At last our turn has come to beat Carlton.*" Time was running out and with just 15 minutes remaining and it looked as though Richmond would finally defeat it's nemisis. But the Blues were not prepared to roll over. The ball went forward where Viv Valentine turned himself almost inside out and booted the ball back over his head for an inspirational goal. Ernie Jamieson who had been moved forward then took a good mark within easy distance of the goal. But like a true defender he missed. A few minutes later Charlie Fisher goaled with a fine running shot. Richmond went forward, but good play by Harry Haughton, Viv Valentine, and Billy Dick who was now playing forward, got the ball to George Topping who goaled. Then Vin Gardiner with a running shot kicked the eighth. When Percy Daykin flashed in and booted Carlton's ninth with only three minutes remaining, the game looked safe. The Tigers put in a final effort but managed only two behinds and the Blues hung on to win by 5 points.

"Fischer was again the best man on the Carlton side. His dash and marking were good, and his kicking the finest on the ground.
Haughton was a good second, and his play in the concluding 15 minutes had much to do with Carlton's win.
McDonald (roving and back) played with his usual determination, and is right at the top of his form.
McGregor did many fine and useful things in the centre.
Leehane (back and ruck), Dick, Shortell (who marked well), Daykin, Gardiner, and White were others who shared in Carlton's victory by reason of their good work.
Canet made a most satisfactory first appearance."
