Game Review

Collingwood’s Michael Christian kept ‘Sticks’ Kernahan goalless as the Pies proved too pacy for the Blues in this Match of the Round at Waverley. Craig Bradley and Stephen Silvagni were the Blues' best.

It was a typically rugged encounter between two of the games’ keenest rivals, and numerous reports were laid by the umpires. Carlton’s David Rhys-Jones made history at the tribunal hearing on the Tuesday night after the match, when he became the first VFL player to be given a suspended sentence on a striking charge.

In his 20th appearance, Rhys-Jones was found not guilty of striking Gavin Crosisca, but a separate charge of hitting Matt Ryan was deemed to be proven. Taking Rhys-Jones’ previous poor record into consideration, the tribunal suspended him for six weeks – then surprised everyone by ruling that he could play again after three weeks! The remainder of his penalty was to be suspended for a period of two years – pending any further on-field violation in that time.

On the other side, Magpie Doug Barwick was suspended for three weeks for striking Carlton’s Brad Shine.

All-in-all, an eventful but unsatisfying day.
