Game Review

The game got underway a few minutes past 3pm in front of a large crowd. Full back Bill Hore's kicking-in from full back was a highlight of the game.
When Richmond kicked its seventh goal late into the final term they looked safe. However Ern Cowley added a goal and then a behind to reduce the margin to 3 points. Cowley then added another behind. Richmond attacked but Smith missed a chance to seal the game and the lead was back out to 3 points. The ball then swung to the Blues' forward line where Charlie Fisher, who had returned to the field, punted the ball through for the winning goal just before the bell.
Carlton held out the Tigers to win their 6th game of 1918 and retain third place in the process.

"Fisher got four goals and Cowley two, but the work of neither was of greater value to the side than Haughton, who, after many seasons of first-class football, is still one of the foremost players of the day. I watched him closely and admiringly. Nearly six feet tall, with muscular arms and legs, with a wide, deep chest, Haughton is an ugly snag for any back man, for he gives nor asks mercy. Up to all the points, I liked his unselfishness more even than his glorious marking and long, low kicking. He was continually helping his mates." (Referee July 10 p5)

At the end of this round Carlton were in 3rd spot on the ladder with a percentage of 126.8.
