Game Review
There could scarcely have been a greater contrast between the teams as they lined up for the opening bounce. Carlton were undefeated and coming off a stirring victory over a powerful Fitzroy, while Melbourne had been soundly beaten in all of their six previous games, and were languishing at the foot of the table.
Perhaps the only viable explanation is that the game was played on the King’s Birthday Holiday Monday, only two days after the Blues had beaten Fitzroy in a tense and physical clash at Princes Park. Yet Melbourne had also played that day, going down by five goals to their closest rival, St Kilda.
More than a century later, Carlton’s paltry score of 8 points remains the club’s lowest-ever total at the MCG. The Blues’ only goal for the match was kicked by centreman Arthur “Shooter’ Ford, in the third quarter.
Despite the loss, Carlton remained firmly ensconced in second place on the ladder behind Fitzroy, with a healthy percentage of 162.93. Collingwood and Geelong made up the top four, with Essendon fifth, but six points adrift.
