Links

I think the recent changes to carltonfc.com.au have altered all the links and most of the articles linked no longer work. I think the articles are still there but the url has been altered so the links we originally had no longer work and may need to be changed.

Thanks for pointing that out.

If you do a search for 'carltonfc' it comes up with 89 pages.

Sounds about right for the amount of pages that might have cfc site links on them.

What do you reckon we should do? Edit the links or delete them?

Chances are the site will be changed again within a year or two. Not sure, maybe the effort is worth it for the traffic it provides the official site?

Jarusa can we tell if there is much cross-traffic either way? I don't use the links at the bottom of the site, but perhaps others do?

I went through the recent articles and found "10 Minutes with Jordan Russell, Grigg, Bower" and altered the links. We could keep doing that- it used to go back to 2001 but I'm not sure whether it still does or whether they retain every article. Would be time consuming to do all that though. They're now in the format http://carltonfc.com.au/Season2007/News/NewsArticle/tabid/4311/Default.aspx?newsId=37134
So will they change next year to 2008 and we'll have to redo them all again? In the meantime we have a lot of links that don't work which will probably best be deleted.

If there isn't much cross-traffic back to the site I would agree. If theres a little we could ask trueblue24 who seems to track the articles a fair bit to help out.

As long as there is 1 article link I would have thought we'd catch most readers? Perhaps delete all but the most recent one, and I can do it for current players.

I've noticed that all the current players now have their news articles listed under "in the news" in their profile. It may be easier to use that.

You mean in carltonfc.com.au - so we could just link to 'In the News' sections at carltonfc.com.au?

Within each player's profile is a section "In The News" which contains all recent articles on that player.

Sounds a much more efficient solution. Would you suggest adding a link to each current listed player, and then we ask Jarusa to provide a list of links for other players - If he sends them to me over the weekend I can fix them up?

Just discovered how to solve the problem. Add "oldwebsite." to the start of the url so it's in the format "http://oldwebsite.carltonfc.com.au/" and links will work again. Not sure whether it will be a long term solution but seems to work now.

Read the last sentence I posted back in March. Have checked a few of those links and they no longer work. Not sure whether those articles are still somewhere but I couldn't find them. A few are "Mike & Dan" articles from pre- 2006. Maybe they know whether they're still available. Otherwise might be better to remove them.

Interested in the views of users of the site as to who actually uses the links, and whether they are integral to the site. Your point is correct but carltonfc.com.au have changed the location of the articles before - am not sure whether the Blueseum has anywhere enough willing workers to track issues like this (ie deleting broken links).

Jarusa - can we check how often this part of the site is utilised?

Other posters - do you like this part of the site?

ps Mike & Dan don't know whether their articles are available.
