(The Carlton Story, H.Buggy and H.Bell p72)

Little is known of Alexander Salton's time at Carlton in 1891 or even 1893.
The Second Twenty/Reserves details of this era are few and far between. However, Rhett Bartlett in his Rhettrospective story on Richmond Reserves players who died in World Wars, ( http://www.footyalmanac.com.au/finding-the-fallen-a-search-for-the-men-the-club-forgot/ ) says that Salton played for Carlton in 1891 and later became a VFL umpire when he retired from football.
He enlisted at the age of 44 and is the only VFL umpire to have died in military service.

Richmond 1886-1889, 1892
Went to Fitzroy F. C. played two seasons (1889-90).
