Paul Starbuck was recruited from Chewton (near Castlemaine). He.played in one Night Premiership match for the Blues - the 1984 Quarter Final against Melbourne - at the age of 17, before representing Victoria in that year's Under-17 Teal Cup Carnival. Three years later, he was a member of Carlton's 1987 Reserve Premiership side. Overall however, in a five-year stay at Princes Park, he played a total of 50 Reserves games (including 6 finals) without earning senior selection again.

In 1989 Starbuck returned home to Castlemaine, where his ex Carlton Reserves coach Col Kinnear - who was then in charge of the Sydney Swans - surprised by selecting him in the pre-season draft. Paul played his only senior game for the Swans against Fitzroy at the SCG in round 12, 1990, then stayed on Sydney's list and played a further 31 Reserves games until he was de-listed at the end of 1991.
