Carlton would have a bye in Round 4 together with Richmond and Footscray. The bye was a feature of the competition at this stage given that there were only 15 teams in the AFL, with Fremantle and Port Power still a glint in the AFL's eye and the Brisbane / Fitzroy merger yet to take place.
