Gallagher, a Victorian originally from Clayton, via Prahran Dragons U/18's, he was picked up by the Crows, was traded at the end of the 2001 season in return for Blue Ben Nelson, who returned home to South Australia. Gallagher had previously played 26 games there from 1999-2001.
There were high hopes that he could fill a back pocket position for the Blues. He made his debut for Carlton in Round 1 of his debut year but missed the next 2 games due to an ankle injury. He then played 6 games straight but a further ankle injury and osteitis pubis would prevent him from playing any more senior games and establishing himself at Carlton. He was not retained after 2002, appearing to pay the price for Carlton's first ever wooden spoon, his disposal by foot was not a strength of his. Gallagher would be best remembered as a high running player who was hard at the contest.
Gallagher played as a TAC Cup top-up player for the Blues reserves in 1998, he wore No.53.
Gallagher went on to Sandringham in the VFL where his ball winning abilities shone through, becoming a key player at that level and playing in Sandy's three consecutive premierships.
2003 - 11; Gallagher would play more than 150 games with the Sandringham Zebras. He won consecutive premierships with the club in 2004, 2005 and 2006, twice won the best and fairest award, in 2004 and 2009, and was made club captain in 2011. However, immediately prior to the 2012 season, he became frustrated with the nature of Sandringham's reserves affiliation with AFL team St Kilda, and left the club.
2012 - Gallagher spent his time as assistant coach of University Blues in the VAFA and whilst he didn’t play, he maintained his training regimen so he could reignite his playing career the following season.
2013 - Gallagher returned to the VFL in 2013, signing with the Frankston Football Club.
2015 - Gallagher played with Bendigo Football League club Strathfieldsaye including being a member of their premiership team.
2016 - Gallagher played with Goulburn Valley Football League club Shepparton.
2017 - Gallagher played with Western Region Football League club Deer Park including being a member of their premiership team.
