Justin Clarkson was selected by the Blues in the 1992 Mid-season draft at pick 24, this was the Blues second pick overall. He was recruited from VAFA club Ormond (he also had played at Springvale and Melbourne U/19's and Reserves). Clarkson was originally on the Sydney Swans playing list for the 1991 and part of the 1992 seasons, in 1991 he managed to play 3 games for Sydney wearing No.56. In 1992, Sydney allocated No.38 to Clarkson but he failed to wear this jumper in a senior game.

Clarkson was a star for Ormond in the VAFA prior to being drafted by Sydney, after his delisting by Sydney he headed back to Ormond. He was selected in the Victorian combined Amateurs team under the control of former Tiger Barry Richardson, he starred in this game which led to Carlton drafting him as a result.

He did not manage a senior game for Carlton.
