Among the twenty or so young men who played their first game of VFL senior football in 1953 were Ron Barassi, Johnny James – and a 22 year-old from Bendigo League club Sandhurst; Noel Evans.
Noel was destined to play just the one game in his Navy Blue guernsey number 29, but like all the others who have earned an opportunity to experience our game at its highest level, he remains the envy of we mere mortals.
Sandhurst rover Noel Evans won the Bendigo League's best and fairest award in 1953 gathering votes in more than half the games played.
Another soon to be Blue, Eaglehawk's half-forward George Ilsley was runner-up.
