Richard Foster came up through the U/19's (1984 - 1985) to later play Reserve Grade Football from 1985 to 1987 for the Blues. Foster was recruited from Bendigo zone club Kangaroo Flat.

Foster was a versatile player who could play at both ends of the ground, he was mainly a forward who would quite regularly feature on the goalkicking tally sheet. In the 1987 Reserves Grand Final he lined up in the back-pocket.

Foster was a member of the 1987 Reserves Premiership Team.

The following year Richard joined the Port Adelaide Football club where he played 145 games and four premierships.

He did not manage a Senior game for Carlton.
