Crowd Rushes Liquor Bar
"During the half time interval at South Melbourne v Carlton football match, played at South Melbourne on Saturday, scenes of great disorder took place near the liquor bar on the eastern side of the outer ground.A man who was standing at the bar, it is alleged, directed an insulting remark to the barman. Jumping over the counter, the barman approached the other with the apparent intention of chastising him, but the crowd rushed the bar, seized bottles of liquor, drank the contents and hurled the empty bottles against a fence. Then they rolled a barrel of beer out of the bar, and "all drinks free" being the motto, the contents of the barrel was soon consumed.
About 14,000 persons were present at the match, and the crush was so great at the big exit gates that in the jostling several persons fell. One lad, about 12 or 14 years of age, was badly trampled on before being extricated."
