Game Review
On this landmark occasion for the Carlton Football Club, future Premiership defender John Goold played his first senior game, and celebrated an 8-point win over Footscray at the Western Oval. Over the next eight injury plagued seasons, 'Ragsy' Goold would rack up another 107 games, and earn the respect and admiration of friend and foe alike. In other results as this topsy-turvy season unfolded, Geelong and Hawthorn fought out a draw at Kardinia Park, and St Kilda beat North Melbourne to climb into the top four behind Essendon, Carlton and Geelong.
"Footscray surprised the Blues in the air, won handsomely across the centre and controlled the ruck where John Schultz mastered John Nicholls.
The Blues were a struggling side until the last quarter when three quick goals sealed the Bulldogs' fate.
Even then the plucky Bulldogs almost saved the game when through inspired play by captain-coach Ted Whitten wiped off two goals off a 20-point deficit.
But the move which saved and then won the game for Carlton was the second quarter switch between full forward Tom Carroll and centre half-forward Gordon Collis.
The move did not pay off until the third term when strong marking Collis kicked two goals to give the Blues a slender lead at the last change.
In the last quarter Carroll became a match winning force at centre half-forward.
Most of Carlton's attacks came through Carroll and his two quick goals were telling factors in the Blues' victory." (Age June 03)
