After an even first quarter, Carlton took control of this match at the Lake Oval, and ran out winners by 25 points. Playing at full-forward, Wes Lofts provided a reliable marking target and kicked five goals, while John Nicholls and Serge Silvagni returned from state team duties to add experience and leadership to a young side. In fact, this was the second-youngest ever Carlton team on record with an average age of 22 years, 37 days, and an average games tally of 33.8 matches.This second successive win lifted the Blues to ninth on the ladder, two wins clear of South Melbourne, with the winless Fitzroy last.
