Game Review
There was some discussion of this game being transferred to the MCG. The cricket and football clubs could not agree to the manangement of the ground and there was a stand off over signing the agreement. On this Saturday afternoon, Carlton all but guaranteed that the minor premiership for 1907 would be coming to Princes Park when they accounted for Collingwood by 11 points - the same margin that had separated the teams after their round 6 meeting at Victoria Park. While the Blues were vanquishing the Magpies, Melbourne was busy defeating St Kilda at the Junction Oval, and by early evening, Carlton was two wins clear of Collingwood on top of the ladder.
Like so many teams on so many occasions throughout the history of Australian Football, Carlton couldn’t kick straight for goal on this Saturday afternoon and their winning margin should have been much greater. Only another super defensive effort by the back six – keeping the Pies scoreless in the final quarter - got the visitors home. Carlton’s promising full-back Doug Gillespie was outstanding for his team, keeping the dangerous Dick Lee to only two goals and leading the defence by example.
With one game to go in the regular season, Carlton (40 points, 155.43%) led Collingwood (32 points, 118.80%) St Kilda (28 points, 120.55%) South Melbourne (28 points, 104.19%) and Geelong (24 points, 91.63%).
