Game Review

Carlton probably reached the nadir of their season. We were both lacking in form and hit with a spate of injuries.

There's many a slip twixt the Cup and......
Carlton is in heaps of trouble and in grave danger of missing out on this year's top three ladder positions. Now, before I'm accused of jumping on to the Blues-knocking bandwagon, let me explain a few things. Carlton is still in second spot on the ladder but losses to Essendon and Hawthorn in the last three rounds have left the Blues depleted by injuries and, I daresay, their confidence has taken a similar pounding. If Melbourne beats Carlton this Saturday, Carlton could tumble to fourth spot. And there's the matter of Carlton's draw over the next few months. A month ago, it would have seemed an easy run into the finals but now I'm not so sure. After Melbourne the Blues get a chance to regroup when they meet St Kilda at VFL Park, which I'm certain Carlton can win comfortably. But then the Blues make a perilous trip to Geelong, followed by a clash against the battling, but determined Bulldogs. After that, the Blues travel to Sydney to play the Swans, which I consider another danger game for Carlton, because the Swans are desperate and are very confident on the SCG. Then it's a big game against the Tigers on the MCG. How will Carlton fare in the next month?

Win or lose, I'm certain coach, David Parkin, is worried about his team's slide from superiority to struggling status. Isn't it funny how, when coaches are interviewed about the rest of the season, their stock answer is that they are only thinking about the next game? Somehow I think David Parkin will be looking further ahead into the fixtures than the game against Melbourne coming up. The Blues major hassle is injuries to consistent performers like Ken Hunter, Ken Sheldon and Wayne Johnston and the indiffernt form of last year's stars, Peter Bosustow being a prime example. Then there was the episode with Warren Jones resigning, which was quickly smoothed over by the club before it blew up into something really serious. Yes, Carlton has got some problems at the moment. It also has Hawthorn and Essendon breathing down its neck, looking to finish in the top three positions. I've no doubt the Blues will figure prominently in this year's finals series but, unless their slide from favoritism is arrested promptly, the Blues could be attempting back-to-back flags from the impossible fourth or fifth positions. - Doug Wade Inside Football.

Hawthorn proved to itself and its supporters that it was able to defeat Carlton when they beat the Blues by 34 points. David O'Halloran and Rodney Eade were the Hawks best while Phil Maylin and Geoff Southby did well for the Blues. - Football Record.
