Game Review

In the wake of devastating bushfires in 1983, the Victorian government gave the go-ahead for a charity match between 1982 VFL Premiers Carlton, and newspaper The Sun's All Star VFL side, to raise funds for victims of the fires.

All proceeds went to the State Disaster Appeal for bushfire victims.

In 1983, the Victorian Government, headed by Premier Cain, would not allow football to be played on a Sunday. The charity match was considered "a oncer and will not set a precedent for Sunday football."

The game was scheduled on a Sunday to maximise attendance, with a crowd of over 30,000 people attending.

Hawthorn coach Allan Jeans was in charge of the All Stars who were missing Leigh Matthews, Peter Daicos and Malcolm Blight through injury.

Carlton was missing Mike Fitzpatrick who had undergone ankle sugery whilst Ross Ditchburn was still in Perth.

The All Stars ran out comfortable winners after an impressive 9 goal second quarter. After that they never looked threatened.

Roach kicked 6 for the Stars, whilst their best were Wiley, Tuck and Edmond.

The Blueseum is lucky enough to have some pictures of this game to rekindle your memories.
