Alexander Frayne
Oldest of 12 children born to John and Mary Frayne (nee McGoogin), both from Ireland. John Frayne was a grocer in Windsor, Victoria. Alex is the brother of Carlton captain Dick Frayne
Mark Pennings in his book "Origins of Australian Football " Vol. 2 (p385) has A. Frayne in the Carlton list of players for season 1881, he doesn't appear in the 1882 list, also Vol 5 has him listed as Alexander Frayne.
Above left: Believed to Alex Frayne, courtesy Norwood's Redlegs Museum web site. This web site said he travelled to South Australia possibly with his brother Nathaniel (1854 -1919), who the site says, was also a Carlton footballer, and who went on to captain Port Adelaide in 1882.
In season 1882 Alex was playing for the Victorians Club in Adelaide.
The Adelaide Observer 19 February 1916 (p15), E. K. Bee in an article about "Old Time Footballers" mentions Alex Frayne amongst a list of former players.
1879 June 25
An A. J. Frayne is mentioned as a member of the the local Adelaide side called the Victorian Football Club.
1879 October 14
The Victorian Club's 1879 season review in the South Australian Register (p1s) said;
"A. Frayne has also much improved and is the fleetest runner with the ball in the team. He plays back, and in that position has few equals, being a sure mark, excellent kick, and very strong."
1880 February 12 p3
An article in the Adelaide newspaper Express and Telegraph about a proposed private visit to England by Australian footballers to play rugby and association football, former Carlton players A.McMichael, A. Waldron, and W. Bracken among other players had signed saying they would be interested. Another player a J. Frayne also signed.
1880 Two former Carlton players Frayne and Turpenny play for Port Adelaide.
At the Port Adelaide end of season athletic games, an N. Frayne featured prominently in the various foot races held.
1880 June 26
Norwood played Carlton at the East Melbourne ground.
A player in the Norwood team squad of 22 is an A. Frayne.
1881 May 07
The Australasian newspaper mentions that three South Melbourne players were crossing to the Melbourne club to play, two possible replacements maybe Carlton's Frayne and the recently retired Carlton player Barrass.
1881 May 30
The Express and Telegraph (p3) reports Alex Frayne playing for the Victorians against Port Adelaide.
1881 July 30
The South Australian team to play Victoria in Melbourne included A. Frayne
1881 November 22
The Port Adelaide News reported that at the Port Adelaide Football Club's annual dinner a toast was proposed by W. Frayne who mentioned his two year connection with the club.
1917 May 04
The Daily News (Perth) carried Alex's death notice.
The Norwood Football Club's history web site called Redlegs Museum has Alex Frayne playing for them in 1882.
