Recruited from the Gippsland town of Trafalgar, Gary Milroy was a giant ruckman or key forward who played Under 19 football for Carlton from 1974 to 1975, and Reserves football from 1975 to 1977.
Son of the Blues’ 1954 Best and Fairest award winner Bill Milroy, Gary was given the honour of wearing Carlton’s iconic number 2 guernsey in 1977 – the same number his father had carried for much of his 90-game career at Princes Park. After Bill retired in 1956, number 2 was then handed to a raw young recruit named John Nicholls – who wore with absolute distinction for the next 17 years.
Trivia buffs love the fact that Bill and Gary Milroy were the two Blues who wore Big Nick’s number before and after the Great Man – even though Gary didn't manage to play a senior game for Carlton.
In 1978, after leaving Princes Park, Gary played VFA football for Coburg where he was first ruck in their 1979 premiership team. Milroy would play 112 games and kicked 66 goals which in anyone's language was a very good career with the Lions.
