Ian Findlay played with the Carlton Reserves team during the 1956 season, his coach at the was Carlton dual premiership star Mick Price. Findlay was recruited to the club by the senior coach Jim Francis. Findlay managed to run out with the reserves team on 9 occasions, if he managed to play one more games (10) he would have been entitled to a club jumper! Findlay was played as a ruck and a forward, he received the princely sum of 27/6 per game.
He did not manage a Senior game for Carlton.
Previous teams - State schools (Ashburton, Gardiner Central) and Scotch College, St. Andrew’s Gardiner, Camberwell Reserves 1955. After Carlton, Findlay would take up the position as Captain-Coach of Catani, in West Gippsland for the 1957 season. In the late 1970s he would maintain his interest in the game by filling the role as the manager of Old Scotch Collegians Warriors (a social side which saw anything from 15 to 25 players turn up looking for a game!)
Occupation – Findlay graduated in 1957 as a medical practitioner, and later as a consultant paediatrician, he worked up until to retirement aged 80 in 2014. He would travel extensively for both training and social reasons.
Family – four children (2 of each) all born in the 1960s. Now fifth generation Carlton supporters. He has since retired to Sunshine Coast and maintains his physical health by participating in the occasional game of tennis and indoor bowls.
His son Alex Findlay is still following the family tradition of supporting the Mighty Blues by turning out to watch the senior team and the Northern Blues.
