Game Review
K. Hands (groin) replaced in selected side by J.Nicholls.This was a danger game for both teams, because the loser faced the real prospect of tumbling out of the top four on the eve of the finals. Essendon started the match as favourites on their home turf, and proved the pundits right by rarely giving the lack-lustre Blues a sniff of the football. The Bombers led at every change, and finished up winning by more than ten goals.
The Blues were too slow, out marked and outplayed. They were humbled by the Dons who missed many easy chances in front of goal. Bruce Comben, John James and Laurie Kerr, were the only leaders who stood up to stave off a greater humiliation.
The only consolation for Carlton came after the game, when news came through that Collingwood had suffered a shock loss to lowly St Kilda - meaning that the Blues had scraped into the finals in fourth place.

All but two Carlton players can be identified by their numbers.
John James (10) can be seen briefly with his familiar socks down, and Graham Gilchrist (28). Perhaps someone can see Graham..
