J. Spear won the Second Twenty drop kick competition with a kick of 59 yards held at Princes Park on Saturday 9th. September 1880. He also competed in the goal kicking competition.

Good centre back, splendid kick, carried the team through the season without a defeat.

1882 Spear played in a mixed Carlton team that played the junior club Melbourne Imperial Trades on Thursday August 31.

1882 Played in the final match of the year on against Melbourne at Princes Oval on September 30 and kicked a goal.

1892 The Sporting Judge, June 18, says Jack Spear, ex Carltonian, captaining Yarra Glen against Lilydale.
