A typically fine Autumn day. Carlton allowed Fitzroy to claw their way back into the match and Fitzroy actually hit the front (I think the great Garry Wilson may have kicked the goal) by a point.

Then a couple of VERY dubious decisions occured right at the death. Greg Wells was tackled about 30 metres out in front of the Hawthorn Stand. It was either Hold in the Ball or Play on but it was given as Holding the Man!!!

The siren had sounded and Greg Wells shot for goal was touched BEFORE it crossed the line by Mario Bortolotto. The umpire decided that the ball was touched, NOT RUSHED, therefore the point stood and we had a draw.

But the tv cameras clearly show Bortolotto 'pushing' the ball over line, so the ball should have been declared 'dead' BEFORE it crossed.

A lucky escape for the Blues.

At Princes Park, Carlton's extremely reliable defender Ken Hunter collected not only 18 kicks and 11 marks, but also top votes for his effort. Hunter is one of the League's most dependable players and his high flying exploits were a constant frustration for the Lion forwards. - Inside Football Player of the Year.

Carlton coach David Parkin has a point. With the new interpretation of the holding the man rule players are getting away with murder. Perfectly good tackles are disallowed and slower players are able to camouflage their deficiencies by having more time to get rid of the ball. Tackling now is a critical part of Australian Football and clubs have developed real skills in this field. Now, however, these skills are being penalised. In the matches I have seen this season players have been well and truly nabbed and held for a couple of seconds without penalty. Yet I have seen free kicks paid for little touches in the back. What of Carlton this season? They are good and they are professional but by no means invincible. David Parkin wouldn't be pleased with the ominous signs of complacency, over confidence and lack of killer instinct displayed against the Lions. With due respects to the Lions, the opening game was one that should never have been lost. Reigning premiers Carlton began its 1982 campaign with a thrilling draw against Fitzroy at Princes Park. The Blues led by 32 points at half time but the Lions, inspired by Mick Conlan and Garry Wilson fought back to take a one-point lead 25 minutes into the final quarter. In the end, Carlton's Greg Wells kicked a point during time-on to tie up the game. - Football Record.

Football and Grog don't mix.
Inside Football urges and immediate ban on alcohol being taken into League grounds. The tragic death of football fan Robert Dickson, 27, at the weekend, was proof that alcohol and football are a dangerous mixture. Mr Dickson was hit from behind while trying to protect his six-year-old son from drunken brawlers at the Carlton-Fitzroy game on March 27 this year. This was not an isolated incident. It was one of many similar incidents that occur far too often each Saturday during the football season. It's a sad fact of life it seems, that something serious has to happen before action is taken. A minority of loutish football fans, who cannot control themselves under the influence of alcohol, is spoiling this great game of ours.
