Game Review
Carlton would trounce the Kangaroos out at Arden Street, taking the game by 50 points. The Blues would welcome 2 newcomers for the game, but one in particular would provide an interesting post-script to the game. Bill Flynn played his only senior game for Carlton and scored 3 goals off the half forward flank - this feat was matched some 54 years later by another single-gamer triple-goal scorer in Daryl Gilmore.This was Carlton's 600th League match. D. Minogue's Straight Talk to Players
"Prior to the North Melbourne - Carlton match D. Minogue, coach of Carlton, delivered the usual address to players. In the course of his remarks, Minogue counselled his men against roughness, and indicated that any exercise of force outside that allowed by the rules would be viewed seriously by the club. He pointed out that reports by umpires on players caused a loss of prestige to the club and to the player concerned, and were a potential source of loss to the playing strength of Carlton.Players were reminded that the umpire would look after the rough tactics of opponents, and that retaliation was unnecessary by the men themselves. Minogue further said that players who practised actions which were subject to reports brought themselves to the levels of the street larrikins, and reminded them that as the latter was fined by the police court, so the player was fined by the loss of pay if he were disqualified.
The adoption of a similar viewpoint to that expressed by Minogue would be beneficial to all clubs and the game generally." (The Age June 16)
