Game Review
In an error-riddled game, both clubs kicked a combined 15 goals, 37 behinds, as the Lions, playing at home, proved too strong for the Blues. At one stage, 12 consecutive behinds were kicked before a goal was scored. For the third week in a row, Carlton had a real chance of winning the match after getting to within 3 points midway through the final quarter, but the Lions responded to run out 15 point winners. However, It was probably only the Lions' poor kicking in front of goal that allowed the Blues to get as close as they did.Luke Blackwell had 26 possessions in the midfield in just his fourth AFL game, which was enough to be considered second best on ground by the umpires, but not good enough to win a Rising Star Nomination for the week. Kade Simpson ran all night and had 25 possessions, while Ryan Houlihan was given the task of negating the Lions' dynamo Jason Akermanis, and did an excellent job.
Unfourtunately, Marc Murphy's outstanding debut year came to an untimely end early in this match, when he was viciously slung to the turf while one arm was being held. The resulting injury curtailed his season, and ended his chances of winning the Rising Star award.
