Game Review
The end-of-season form surge had come and delivered our third win in a row, this time against the mid tabled Fitzroy.Jack Hale must have had an aversion to late winter as for the third successive year he was reported in round 17 after being booked in round 15 in 1937. Amazingly, these were the only reports of his career and he was found not guilty on all 4 occasions.
At the end of this round Carlton were in 6th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 110.4.
SCHMIDT, McINNES, WROUT & JACK HALE FOUND HIS PLACE
"The Carlton - Fitzroy game was notable for the number of freak goals scored.Schmidt and Mcinnes for Carlton snapped overhead goals and Sharp (Fitzroy) scored a remarkable goal as he was flung to the ground.
The best goal of the day was scored by Wrout (Carlton). From near the centre, he drop kicked one of the finest goals ever scored at the ground."
"Hale (Carlton), one of the few present day players to exploit the place kick, had two attempts at it in the game against Fitzroy. In the third quarter, against the wind, the ball fell short of the posts, but on his second attempt in the last quarter he sent the ball straight through the posts from about 50 yards out." (Age August 26 p10)
" For years the hard working Carlton rover had been trying, with scant success, to score with that kick, and there was great applause - and some astonishment - when he put it through." (Argus August 26 p9)
Maybe one of the last times a Carlton player used the place kick?
Ken Luke
"In recent matches Mr. Ken Luke, president, has been giving valuable prizes to players mentioned in "The Argus" vote for best and fairest players. For his success on Saturday Carney will receive a cabinet of cutlery - he had previously won a tea and coffee service - and Chitty will receive a tea and coffee service." (Argus August 26 p9)Team
