This game was a thriller between the long-time combatants that stuck in the mind of one writer for the club website:"Picture it if you can... almost 70,000 screaming fans packed into a typically wet and windy VFL Park to see the two famous rivals square up. After a see-sawing battle all day, Carlton trails by 6 points deep into time on in the last quarter when Peter McCormack manhandles star recruit Warren Ralph in a way that makes Ralph's girlfriend jealous. Ralph's free kick to tie the match, taken after the siren, clearly sneaks in for a goal. The goal umpire, perhaps intimidated by the thought of being set on fire by the Collingwood cheer squad behind him, signals a point, and Carlton are denied two premiership points."

This was a costly loss for Carlton, dropping us two wins behind ladder-leaders Hawthorn, to fifth spot on the ladder.
There was a sensational finish at VFL Park where Collingwood beats Carlton by five points. Carlton full-forward, Warren Ralph, takes a free kick after the final siren and a goal would level the scores for a draw. Ralph kicks a behind, however, prompting a Press ban by the Blues officials and anger by several Carlton officials who were near the goal umpire and claim Ralph's kick was true and a goal should have been the correct call. - Inside Football.
The biggest crowd of the round - 68,082, saw the Magpies hold out the Blues to win by five points in a hard, slogging match at VFL Park. This clash between the competition's most popular teams was held on ANZAC day, with the Pies holding the lead at every change - by six, two, seven and finally five points. Given the amount of play they had in the second term, the Magpies should have been miles in front at half time. However, they ran up a 20 point lead midway through the final term. But the Blues steadied, despite their struggling form, to all but catch their foe by the final change. Both teams slugged it out "point by point" in the final term with neither team able to achieve a break. Ralph marked close in as the siren sounded with Carlton six points in arrears, a slippery ball, a bit of an angle, rain falling, and a ton of pressure. This game was not decided until the final kick of the game after the siren, the miss by Warren Ralph, gave the Pies a victory by five points. Young Carlton star, David Glascott, must be thinking what he has done against the Magpies. This week, after being shepherded off by a Collingwood player, David spent two nights in hospital with concussion.
