Game Review
In a top-of-the-table clash between South Melbourne and Carlton, the Blues failed to record a goal in the crucial final quarter and lost this nail-biter by 5 points. The weather was fine, but with a strong wind blowing towards the Lake end goal. South won the toss and kicked with the wind, but their 2.9 for the quarter was wasteful, especially since the Blues failed to score. However, Carlton did no better when they had the wind, adding only 2.3 to South's 1.0 to trail by 12 points at half time.
The Blues played their best football of the game in the third term, and all money was on them when they started the last quarter only one point down and with the wind at their backs. But the Southerners dug deep and were clinging to a 5-point lead when the final bell rang.
"The reporters on the dailies are very much astray in their estimates of crowds, as was shown last Saturday when a throng, officially estimated at 40,000, was put down in the papers as 25,000. The gate money amounted to 584 pounds, and easily 5,000 persons gained free admittance by pulling down part of the outer fence." (Record, Emerald Hill, June 28 p3)
Recently returned war hero Les Kittle (who had won a Military Medal in the trenches of France) played well on the forward line, and after this round Carlton were in 2nd spot on the ladder with a percentage of 166.8.
