Game Review

Carlton made history once more in this match against Collingwood at Princes Park, when 19 year-old Harvey Dunn jnr took his place on the reserves bench in his debut at senior level for the Blues.

The first youngster recruited under the League’s new father-son rule, Dunn had originally been tied to North Melbourne, until Carlton convinced the authorities that he should be allowed to follow in the footsteps of his father, who had played 71 games for the Navy Blues between 1924 and 1929.

Unfortunately for Harvey and his team, the game didn’t end up a joyous occasion. Although the Blues stuck with their more accomplished opponents for most of the journey and were always within striking distance, Collingwood led all the way and won by 14 points.

Future media star Lou Richards was Collingwood’s best, while Ken Hands, Fred Davies and captain Ern Henfry stood out for Carlton. The Blues slipped down the ladder to ninth after this loss, and any hopes of making the finals were just about shot.
