(The Herald. June 14 1919)
1876 August 19
The Mercury, (Fitzroy) newspaper, mentions a proposed match between Abbotsford and the Yarra Yarra Cricket Club club from Collingwood. Abbotsford however, declined to play Yarra Yarra.
Yarra Yarra wanted to take on any team, a 25, or a combined team from the local area with a view of establishing a senior club next year.
The Mercury added that Carlton's McMichael was from the Yarra Yarra club.
Brother of Alf McMichael
1939 The Argus March 09 p22 mentions that Sam McMichael (former Fitzroy follower) was the amateur champion middle weight boxer of Victoria.
Is this the same person? Did Sam cross to Fitzroy like quite a few other disgruntled Carlton players?
"The old Victorian representative cricketer, footballer, and amateur boxer, who died on Saturday last. Under the name of Onlooker, his writings in the Referee were widely appreciated."
(Trove- Referee April 23 1923 p3) There is a poor quality image of Sam in the Referee on page 3.
McMichael - On the 21st. of April, at a private hospital, Gardenvale, Samuel Albert, the loving husband of Emma McMichael, 4 Seaview avenue, Brighton, beloved father of Thelma, Muriel, and Jessie, aged 53 years (late of the Education department). (The Argus April 23 p1)
McMichael was buried at the Brighton cemetery.
Sam Albert McMichael was 53 when he died, he would have been born in around 1870, therefore he would have too young to be playing for Carlton in 1875.
To confuse matters, according to ancestry.com, Alf McMichael's brother Sam Albert was born in 1869.
S. A. McMichael was the younger brother of Alf McMichael. His obituary written in the Australasian April 28 1923 by Jack Worrall only mentions him playing for the Fitzroy Football Club.
