It was a bad week for Carlton. Wes Lofts resigned as Football Director, replaced by Stephen Kernahan. In a bizarre motivational speech, olympic champion Shane Gould gave each player a wooden spoon. The media and the football public had already pegged the Blues for receiving this award for the year 2002. A massive seven changes were made to the side, 6 of those for form reasons, allowing both Blake Campbell and Bret Thornton to make their debut.

The Blues started well but the the Dockers were able to control the game through their talls Troy Simmonds, Justin Longmuir, and Matthew Pavlich. McKernan was concussed very early in the game after a head clash with team mate Davies. Brett Ratten tried hard for the Blues and had 25 possessions. Justin Davies showed some encouraging signs with a three-bounce run after shrugging off a tackle at half-back and finishing with a goal to Fevola.
