Game Review

The Blues wore black armbands as a mark of respect to their team mate Bob Green who was tragically killed in a vehicle accident last Saturday.
One change to the selected team. AlanThynne replaced Williams due to an ankle injury.

In shades of their wild and violent clash four years earlier in the 1945 Preliminary Final, Carlton and Collingwood fought out another spiteful match at Princes Park. Fights and scuffles erupted soon after the first bounce, and Carlton’s Ray Garby was reported by the field umpire for striking Collingwood’s Gordon Hocking. Garby’s hand had been stomped while he was on the ground, so he jumped to his feet and belted his nearest opponent – which happened to be Hocking - but it seems he got it wrong. Years later, Lou Richards wrote that it was another Magpie, Phonse Kyne, who had accidentally stepped on Garby’s hand.

Richards himself was in the thick of the action, and afterward was accused of kneeing or kicking Ken Hands in the head. Hands was helped from the field with blood pouring from a gash behind one ear, and that night, the Sporting Globe newspaper accused Collingwood of ‘vicious’ play.

There was only four points separating the teams at the last break, but Carlton’s withering burst of eight goals to two in the last quarter got the Blues home by an even 30 points.
