1893 Reserves

The economic depression had which begun in1890 reached its peak in 1893. Victoria and Melbourne was hardest hit as the 1880s Land Boom collapsed.
28% of trade unionists were without work and probably more than a third of Melbourne breadwinners unemployed*
Families unable to pay their rent or make their mortgage repayments were thrown out onto the streets. Then, there was no financial safety net provided by Government.
Unemployment greatly affected the football club's revenue. Clubs were trying to save money and cutting the funding of the Reserves was one way of doing that.
In 1892 many VFA clubs did not field a Reserves team, and this came to head early in the season of 1893, when, after a few rounds, the VFA abandoned the Reserves or Second Twenty competition completly.
Carlton tried its best to hang on to its Second Twenty and the secretary E. Penny tried to arrange games with junior clubs. A few games were played on an ad-hoc basis, but to no avail.
So the VFA clubs turned to a local junior club to act as a reserve or feeder side to the senior team.

Below is the final VFA 1892 reserve/second twenty ladder which had only 7 clubs competing.

Note:

Carlton had a Reserves or Second Twenty from 1866 to 1893. Details of these games are hard to find, many results and players are unknown. What we have found, are in the Pre VFL year pages alongside the Senior teams details. Players from these Reserves sides are also listed alongside the Senior teams players in the Pre VFL Players section of Blueseum.

Carlton Juniors and/or Carlton District were probably the feeders for the senior club until the establishment of the VFL Reserve Competition.
Further research is required into these competitions.
