Game Review
This was the first time that
Ron Barassi coached against his old side Melbourne in a ‘Night’ match.
Kevin Hall became the 3rd Carlton player to score 6 goals in a ‘night’ match and was Carlton's highest ‘night’ score (21 goals 10 behinds 136 points) and their greatest winning margin of 76 points. This was the League’s record highest score scored in any ‘night’ competition match that was played at the Lake Oval, Albert Park.
Carlton’s first quarter of 9 goals and 3 behinds was their best quarter score and it was the first time that that they kept a side scoreless in the first quarter and the third time that they kept a side scoreless the other was 1st Round of 1963 when they kept Fitzroy scoreless in the 2nd and last quarters.
In this match Ian Collins was "very quick". The Carlton change rooms had been robbed and Serge Silvagni lost his wedding ring, Ron Barassi lost a valuable wrist watch, etc, ‘Collo’ lost his wallet and quickly said the wallet had £31 in it (a very large sum in those days). Carlton and Sir Kenneth Luke ensured that all the players were reimbursed for their cash losses before they left the ground. – From The Sun September 3, 1965 page 49.
