This game occured in the week off between Round 7, 1968 and Round 8, 1968 to promote football in NSW through the New South Wales Australian National Football League. During the same week a State of Origin match between Victoria and South Australia was played at the MCG featuring several Carlton stars including John Nicholls, John Goold and Alex Jesaulenko. St Kilda dominated the second half to defeat Carlton by 58 points at the Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday. This match attracted more spectators than the rugby league at the adjoining ground. The first half was poor but after the change both teams turned on a real spectacle for the 22,472 fans. The curtain raiser in Sydney was won by the VFL reserves team over a NSW XVIII.
