2013 Pre-Season

Carlton would be Runners-Up in the 2013 Pre-Season Competition to the Brisbane Lions.

The 2013 Pre-Season continued the recent trend of having the first round addressed through 3 teams playing 2 halves each, with alternating opponents. Carlton had to travel to NSW to play the Swans and the Giants…

Game Review

The Blues got under way in Season 2013.... at about half time in this match!

The young Giants had an impressive first half, with great ball carry through the middle and very good hassling of our ball carriers.

But when they changed ends the Blues started to gel better as a team, and with 4 goals coming from our tall timber, including the last from big Casboult with 30 seconds to go, the Blues were in front.

Carlton kicked the last three goals of the game to overrun an impressive GWS in their opening NAC Cup encounter at Blacktown on Sunday. Levi Casboult kicked the winning goal with under a minute to play after the Giants had dominated most of the contest against an inaccurate Carlton. The form of Sam Rowe, who spent 2012 overcoming testicular cancer, will please Carlton fans. - Inside Football.

The best players for the Blues were; Hampson, Gibbs, Simpson, Rowe and Casboult.

This crowd of 4,087 is the smallest night/preseason crowd that Carlton has ever played before

Game Review

The Blues exploded in the first half, tearing through the Swans albeit young midfield and defence with ease. It was like the good old days when the Swans never bothered with the pre-season!

Carlton made it two wins from two starts under new coach Mick Malthouse as it outplayed last year's premiers Sydney. It was one-way traffic from the outset as a slimmer Brock McLean, along with Marc Murphy, Andrew Walker and Shaun Hampson ensured that the Swans were unable to slip into gear. Sydney had never been one to take the preseason competition seriously and it was comprehensively outgunned around the contests and unable to stop the Blues' spread. Carlton led by 35 points at half time and if not for a few late Swans goals in junk time, the margin would have been much greater. - Inside Football.

Best players for the Blues were McLean, Murphy, Gibbs, Hampson, and Walker.

Game Review

In hot and blustery conditions it was a fairly even first half with scores level at half time, but a Taylor Walker inspired third quarter the Crows got the Crows out to a 30 lead with Taylor Walker having 5 goals including two super goals up to 3 quarter time. The Blues rallied and came home with a flurry, even though the Blues kept the Crows scoreless they would go down by 3 points.

Andrew Walker took another trademark 'speccie' as the Blues rallied late. http://www.carltonfc.com.au/video/2013-03-08/cfc-tv-walker-takes-a-screamer

The irony of this game was that losing side progressed to the NAB Cup Grand Final to play the Brisbane Lions, these two sides played off in the 2007 Pre-season Grand Final in which the Blues won.

McLean and Murphy both booted supergoals for the Blues, this was Murphy's third 'nine pointer' with the Blues and put him equal most kicked alongside Brendan Fevola and Digby Morrell.

Best for the Blues were; Carrazzo, McLean, Lucas and Armfield.

Game Review

The Blues were up at half time, but failed to fire in the second as the Lions ran out with the game. The Blues seemed very top heavy with lots of lofted kicks forward, whilst the Lions were crisp through midfield and had effective marking targets.

Best players for the Blues were Lucas, Gibbs, Robinson, Simpson and Kreuzer.

An interesting footnote is that one of the officiating umpires Jordan Bannister played in the Blues 2005 winning premiership team.
