Carlton selected boyhood Bluebagger Angus Schumacher with pick 70 in the 2017 NAB AFL National Draft. With one of the longest and penetrating kicks in this year’s draft, there’s no wonder the rangy left-footer was the top rebounder in the TAC Cup – averaging nearly four per game. Showcasing his elite kick at the AFL Draft Combine in October, the young Bendigo Pioneer was one of only four players to achieve a perfect score in the goalkicking test. The young defender also knows how to lay a strong tackle and apply relentless pressure to his opponent, while his quick hands, coupled with his ability to make good decisions, makes him a dangerous prospect. Carlton’s GM of List Management and Strategy Stephen Silvagni said he was impressed with Schumacher’s ability to find time and space with the ball. “Angus is one of those players who always seems to have time with the ball,” Silvagni said. “He’s a great size and has all the attributes you want in a modern footballer.”
Interestingly Schumacher was the third Bendigo Pioneer taken by Carlton in the 2017 National Draft, maybe this is an omen going back to the Blues halcyon days when the Bendigo zone was a recruiting gold mine!
Schumacher spent all of 2018 at the Northern Blues, gradually moving up the field from a defensive role. Despite some murmurs of imminent selection and a long list of defensive injuries, selection did not follow for the Blues. However he was of course retained and then turned up to the 2019 pre-season in fantastic shape - a debut beckons!
After numerous games being named as an emergency, Angus Schumacher would finally crack it for a senior game during the 2019 season when the Blues took on the reigning premiers West Coast Eagles in Round 20 at Marvel Stadium. Sadly for Schumacher, who showed some promise on debut, he would not manage another game for the Blues and was delisted at the end of the 2019 season.
He trained with St Kilda prior to the 2019 draft in the hope of continuing with a second AFL club, but signed with East Perth after missing out on selection. From here, Schumacher popped up as a top up player for West Coast (allowed given COVID, injuries) and was named as an emergency for their Round 2 match against North Melbourne and was listed in number 63.
Angus Schumacher spent fiive years in the WAFL where he became an establsihed senior player. Angus has been a dominant player in the WAFL in recent seasons, finishing top 3 in his club’s best and fairest, playing state football, winning best afield honours in 2023 against South Australia, and being selected in the WAFL team of the year on multiple occasions.

For the 2025 season, Angus Schumacher joined the North Adelaide Roosters in the SANFL from the East Perth Football Club. Angus, 25 years old, is a 194 cm midfielder who wins his own ball at the contest and has very good decision-making and kicking skills. Angus is a mature player with leadership qualities and will add a different dimension to our existing midfield group. Angus averaged 23 disposals, 4 marks, 7 clearances and 4 tackles a game in season 2024, highlighting his ability to impact the game in multiple ways. - Nth Adelaide FC.
Schumacher was recruited from Bendigo FL club Stathfieldsaye via the Bendigo Pioneers.
