David Forbes was recruited from Bendigo zone club Mitiamo which was the former club of Blues star on-baller Ken Sheldon. A slender, speedy and very talented junior, he won Mitiamo's junior award on three occassions in 1980, 1981 and 1982. At the age of 14 he became the youngest winner of the Best and Fairest of the Loddon Valley League in the Junior Competition. In 1981, Forbes was a Victorian schoolboy representative, and 1982 played Teal Cup for Victoria U/17's. In 1984 Forbes toured Ireland with a Junior Representative Team that included future Carlton legend Stephen Silvagni. Forbes came up through the Carlton's U/19's (1983 - 1985) to later play Reserve Grade Football in 1985 and 1986 for the Blues. Forbes transferred to Melbourne and played some reserve grade football for the Demons in 1986 wearing No.57.

Upon his return from Ireland he contracted a severe bout of Glandular Fever, which limited his training capabilities and this virtually ended his career.

He did not manage a Senior game for Carlton.
