The Australasian, June 04 1887 mentions;
"Hems, who has played so long for Hotham, has joined Carlton, and intends to give that team the benefit of his services."
In his debut game he had the "glory" of scoring his side's first goal, maybe with his first kick?
Unfortunately he only played less than one quarter of football before being injured.

Just before quarter time Hems scored the Blues first goal.
He was then injured and Carlton played one man short for the remainder of the game.
