This was the round that Percy Jones officially announced his retirement as a player. "If I was called upon to play now, I wouldn't do the senior team justice" - Carlton coach Peter "Percy" Jones.Carlton forward Mark Maclure could not get an easier goal than the one he got in the first quarter against Collingwood on Monday. Magpie defender Bill Picken, who was involved in a scuffle with Maclure before the first bounce, handballed straight to Maclure after being given a 15 metre penalty. Maclure snapped up the gift handpass, raced into goal and kicked accurately from only 30 metres. Maclure would have been entitled to say "Thanks for coming Billy". - Jim Main Inside Football
The number five is becoming a bit of a nightmare for Collingwood! For example, losing the 1979 Grand Final by FIVE points - losing Monday's game by FIVE points - having FIVE more scoring shots than Carlton - Collingwood's quest for the FIVE is becoming harder each week - our champion rover Ron Wearmouth was forced to leave to leave the ground early in the match and his number is FIVE - the Carlton player that caused Ron Wearmouth to leave the ground, Ken Sheldon, wears number FIVE - Carlton's Jim Buckley played well and kicked FIVE goals - Collingwood had trouble with Carlton's FIVE small men all day. - Ray Shaw Inside Football
Many critcs slammed Carlton for not transferring their big clash against Collingwood on Monday from Princes Park to the vacant VFL Park. The match was originally scheduled for VFL Park, but the Blues insisted it be played on their home ground. This was seen by critics as a selfish attitude by Carlton - putting their own interests before that of the League and the football public in general. It was claimed that the big clash would have attracted 70,000 people at VFL Park - all comfortably seated. One irate Carlton supporter contacted INSIDE FOOTBALL last week and she gave the Blues side of the arguement - something which she believes has been ignored. She said that if Carlton had played at VFL Park instead of Princes Park it would have been their fifth game in a row away from home. The Blues next home match is against Footscray on July 19, so if they had played Collingwood at Princes Park, they would have been away from Princes Park for eight matches - two months in total. I still can't believe that Percy Jones has packed up his boots once and for all. The Carlton character has said many times that he wants to play at least one more game - his 250th - but he has only one vote on the selection panel - his own. He has played some reserve games this year and has continued training - albeit a scaled down routine. Well, he finally has given up all hope of playing that elusive 250th and has announced his retirement (he would have been the first Tasmanian footballer to do so). As I said, it all seems so convincingly real and if so, then thanks to Percy for his contribution to the game and his entertainment repertoire.
