Game Review

Carlton unfurled the 1995 premiership flag for the second time, this time in front of their true home ground. In direct contrast to last week’s shocker, this appeared to inspire the Blues, who became fired up and switched on in this impressive display against the Demons. The hierarchy had dumped a few players from last week’s embarrassing poleaxing at the hands of the Dockers, and brought back Rohan Welsh (in his new number 3 jumper) and Simon Beaumont for their first games for the year. In addition, former Saint Craig Devonport would play his first – and only – game in Navy Blue and kick 2 goals from just 4 kicks. Finally, we were able to welcome back Stephen Kernahan from a hamstring injury, a move which would straighten up our forward entries no-end. He and Earl Spalding each kicked 4 goals. However the decision to play Kernahan would have adverse consequences, as his hamstring injury worsened and would now keep him out for the next 3 games. Brent Heaver also kicked 3 goals.

The Blues shot out of the blocks with a 15 goal opening half as they opened up a near 10 goal lead. They were ruthless in midfield with Brett Ratten, Matthew Hogg , Scott Camporeale and Craig Bradley all racking up 20+ possessions to set up forward thrusts. Justin Madden returned to form and had the better of Jim Stynes. Stephen Silvagni, Ang Christou, Michael Sexton, Glenn Manton and Ron De Iulio were rock solid in defence.
