Game Review
Carlton fans finally got to see their hero Anthony Koutoufides, playing his first game of the year after sustaining a serious knee injury in the 2001 first semi-final against Richmond. Although he spent much of the game on the interchange bench, he still managed to kick 3 goals.Carlton started well, kicking the first 2 goals of the match, before the Demons responded with 4 unanswered goals. Both teams would kick 6 goals by quarter time. But the Demons then took control with 7 goals in the second quarter while keeping the Blues goalless, to take a 44 point lead at half time. The Blues battled on gamely in an even second half, keeping the Demons to that same margin at game end. Neitz' size and accurate kicking was a major headache for the Blues with the spearhead kicking 9.
In even worse news for Carlton fans, Lance Whitnall suffered a very nasty shoulder injury when Brendan Fevola crashed into his back trying to take a mark in the 2nd quarter. This would prove to be a big blow for Carlton as he was the teams best player in 2002 up to that point. The only good news was that the player who replaced him on the ground was Anthony Koutoufides who had a 'golf bag' over his injured knee and leg.
Scott Camporeale (23), Justin Murphy (19), Ryan Houlihan (18) and Brett Ratten (17) were the major possession winners.
