FEVER PITCH

"The Australasian" (1/5/'24) states:
"Close upon 60,000 people lined the stands and banks at Carlton, and witnessed a remarkable game. Just as the final bell rang McCarthy (Essendon) took a brilliant mark within kicking distance of the goal, and the crowd in their excitement surged across the ground. Mounted troopers then galloped on to prevent interference with McCarthy's kick, which failed to carry the distance, and the match ended in a tie admist wild excitement. Feeling ran very high towards the finish, and there were several fights - one that started in front of the press box being continued out on the park, evidently to a finish.
On the same afternoon there were 30,000 spectators at the South Melbourne-Fitzroy match, and a crowd of 13,000 watched the game between Richmond and Geelong."
