Game Review

Carlton narrowly lost to South Melbourne by 5 points in front of a crowd of 31, 500 people at Princes Park. George Ferry kicked 3 goals on debut.

In the first half Carlton's stumbling block was South champ Ron Clegg who turned many an attack and provided much drive for the Southerners. Down by 21 points points at half time the Blues rejigged their attack. Keith Warburton went to centre half forward and then outplayed Clegg in the second half and Carlton got within two points late in the third quarter. "Warburton gave an amazing exhibition of brilliance and electrified the whole team into action. Henfry won in the centre, Kerr took charge on a wing, Beasy began to get goals from a pocket and the defence steadied."

The Blues had plently of scoring opportunities in the last term, but poor kicking let them down with only two goals from eight scoring shots. "Three desperate attacks in the closing minutes of play all yielded points when a goal was needed badly." Jack Spencer wasted a chance when took a mark only 25 yards from goal but he foolishly handballed and the move came unstuck. Bruce Comben had a chance with twenty seconds to go to draw the game, but from 40 yards he only mangaged one point.
